瘴気 ミアズマ
The edgy dark hero who sees disease in stagnant air
A 40-year-old edgy dark hero. Wears a plague mask and dramatically proclaims "stagnant air (miasma) breeds disease." Koch and Pasteur's germ theory identified pathogens, not "bad air," as the cause of disease, stealing his villain role.
Believed since ancient Greece. Completely denied by Koch's bacteriology.
Key Figures
Scientific Explanation
Koch's postulates proved specific microorganisms cause specific diseases. John Snow traced cholera to water sources, epidemiologically proving it wasn't "air."
Lesson
"Plausible explanation" and "correct explanation" are different. Disease is common where it smells = smelly air causes disease—a confusion of correlation and causation.
Catchphrase
O dark miasma... disease is born from the air...
Rivalries
Chlorine disinfection began during the miasma era. A rare case where correct practice arose from wrong theory.
Entrance
(Emerging from fog) ...The miasma is thick. This place reeks... of disease...
...What? Air purifier? Such things cannot dispel my miasma (dramatic pose)
Interactions
Miasma: "Chlorine... your disinfecting power was originally used to dispel MY miasma."
Chlorine: "True. But what was killed wasn't 'bad air'—it was bacteria."
Miasma: "...Can't you just say 'results are what matter'?"
Chlorine: "You can take correct action for wrong reasons. But without understanding why, you'll misjudge next time."
Miasma: "...Scientists are merciless."
Exit
...Correlation and causation differ. Disease was indeed common where it smelled. But the cause wasn't "air."
Even a wrong theory birthed correct hygiene practices. History cannot simply divide things into right and wrong.
