The scaredy-cat whose barrier vanishes with a breeze
An extreme scaredy-cat with a small card hanging from the neck. Claims "The substance from this badge eliminates all viruses within 1 meter!" but the slightest breeze blows the effective range away. Exploited pandemic anxiety for a sales boom but received multiple cease-and-desist orders from the Consumer Affairs Agency for misleading advertising.
Sales began in the 2010s. Exploded during the 2020 pandemic but received multiple cease-and-desist orders from the Consumer Affairs Agency for unsubstantiated claims about eliminating airborne viruses.
Key Figures
Scientific Explanation
It is physically impossible for a few grams of chlorine dioxide hanging from one's neck to maintain virus-killing concentrations in open or ventilated spaces. Gas diffuses, diluting instantly in open air. If it could maintain high enough concentration to kill viruses, it would also destroy human mucous membranes (eyes, nose, throat). The Consumer Affairs Agency ruled that claims of "wearing it eliminates viruses/bacteria in your space" were unfounded, issuing multiple corrective orders.
Lesson
When in fear or panic, people seek "talismans." They'll buy scientifically impossible products if it eases anxiety. Calm thinking and basic physics knowledge are the best defense.
Catchphrase
This badge will protect you! ...Please don't let the wind blow...
Rivalries
Chlorine (Cl) is the real disinfecting element proven in pools and tap water. Mocks: "You think my disinfecting power works from a tiny card? I need to be dissolved in water to do my job."
Entrance
(Nervously entering with a card hanging from neck) W-with this on, I'm safe... Virus-free zone within 1 meter!
...Huh? Useless in wind? I-it's fine indoors... (barrier vanishes from AC breeze)
Interactions
Badgio: "Chlorine! I'm sterilizing the space with chlorine dioxide! We're allies!"
Chlorine: "...I disinfect pools at 0.4-1.0 ppm. Maintain 0.1+ ppm in tap water. That's 'disinfection.'"
Badgio: "I release chlorine dioxide too!"
Chlorine: "Your card releases negligible amounts. In open air, it diffuses to zero concentration instantly. If it could maintain lethal concentrations, the wearer's eyes and throat would be destroyed."
Badgio: "B-but customers feel safe..."
Chlorine: "That's 'feeling safe' not 'being safe.' Don't sell fake safety using my name. Teach masks and handwashing."
Exit
Fear robs judgment. In pandemic anxiety, people wanted the comfort of "doing something." But it was a talisman, not science.
Real infection control is unglamorous. Handwashing, masks, ventilation. Trust basic physics and chemistry over flashy badges.
