生命箱 オルゴン
The recluse in a box claiming "Cosmic energy cures everything"
A suspicious man hiding inside a "mystery box (Orgone Accumulator)" made of metal and wood. Claims "Enter this box and cosmic life energy (Orgone) gathers to cure all diseases." Einstein dismissed it as "just temperature differential." FDA finally charged fraud for "selling a wooden box as medical equipment." The hardware version of Élan Vital.
Proposed by Wilhelm Reich. Charged as fraud by the FDA, Orgone Accumulators were ordered destroyed. Reich himself was imprisoned and died in jail.
Key Figures
Scientific Explanation
Reich showed the device to Einstein, but Einstein's assistant concluded "the temperature difference inside and outside the box is fully explained by the insulating properties of wood and metal." No need to hypothesize unknown "Orgone" energy. The FDA charged the sale of devices claiming medical effects without clinical trial data as fraud, ordering all devices destroyed.
Lesson
Before hypothesizing "unknown energy," check whether known physics can explain it. Beware devices claiming "medical effects" without scientific verification.
Catchphrase
Enter this box and all diseases are cured! ...Temperature difference? Can't hear you!
Rivalries
Aluminum is the quintessential lightweight metal. Metal's physical properties (insulation, conduction) are fully explained by known physics—no need for "unknown energy."
Entrance
(Peeking from wooden/metal box) ...Want to come in? Enter this box and you won't need personality diagnosis. Cosmic energy makes you perfect!
Einstein called it "temperature difference." FDA destroyed them. ...But some people still believe... (whispering)
Interactions
Orgone: "Aluminum! You're metal! You can be used in an Orgone Accumulator!"
Aluminum: "...My thermal conductivity is 237 W/(m·K). Temperature differences in a metal-and-wood box are fully explained by insulation and conduction differences."
Orgone: "No! It's Orgone energy gathering..."
Aluminum: "Einstein's assistant reached the same conclusion. No need to hypothesize unknown energy for phenomena explained by known physics."
Orgone: "But it gets warm inside the box! That's proof!"
Aluminum: "Your body heat is just trapped inside. Calling that 'cosmic energy' is just naming your own body temperature."
Exit
"Unknown energy" sounds appealing. But if known physics explains it, no need for new energy hypotheses. Don't forget Occam's razor.
If entering a wooden box cured all diseases, every hospital would be a box manufacturer. Always demand clinical trial data from "devices" claiming medical effects.
