Element 98. Named after California and the University of California. Synthesized in 1950 by Thompson, Street, Ghiorso, and Seaborg by bombarding Cm-242 with alpha particles. Cf-252 is a "living neutron source" that spontaneously fissions, emitting copious neutrons. Used in neutron radiography, cancer treatment, oil well logging, and reactor startup. At ~$27 million per gram — one of the most expensive substances on Earth
